A scholarship donation made the purchases of the iPads possible for all the first year students in the inaugural year of the initiative. A generous $1.2 million gift from John Tu, co-founder and CEO of Fountain Valley-based Kingston Technology, will cover the costs of the iPads for this second year until 2015. A custom database has been built to manage the information for each student iPad and provide any codes that are necessary for students to redeem provided apps in the AppStore. Students access this database with their student ID's via the course management system.

The medical center is implementing AirWatch and we have asked the first year students to configure an AirWatch profile, but we are still in the process of exploring the use of an MDM.

Our colleague, Dr. Mary Frances Ypma-Wong, put together a great spreadsheet of the eTextbooks provided to the first and second year students at UCIrvine:   http://www.imeded.uci.edu/textbooks.asp   The main differences in the eTextbook offerings in this second year of the iPad program was that many of the titles moved from a subscription basis (ex. one year) to a perpetual license so that students could be sure they had access to the materials beyond the year the textbook was used in a course.  Also, some of the textbooks are accessed online through the UCI Medical Library (ex. AccessMedicine as Martin had mentioned) so that costs were not duplicated and there were were a few more titles available via Inkling and highlighting and annotating features from Vitalsource demonstrating the greater maturity of the eTextbook market from a year ago.
